DPS Indirapuram in association with Spic Macay organized an Odissi Dance recital by Padmashri Ileana Citaristi on the occasion of world dance day on 29th April 2019. Padmashri Ileana Citaristi, the world famous Odissi dance exponent has given many performances and lecture demonstrations all over the world.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the School Principal, Mrs. Sangeeta Hajela, Vice-Principal, Mrs. Priya John and the esteemed guests. The School Principal, Mrs. Sangeeta Hajela expressed her gratitude to Spic Macay for reaching Indian culture to the hearts of the school children by giving them such opportunities to witness live performances by world renowned artists. She also expressed her belief that Padmashri Ileana Citaristis performance would leave an indelible mark on the students.

As the performance began, Padmashri Ileana Citaristi and her team of accompanying artists mesmerized the gathering recreating the traditional setting for the Odissi dances which was the temple courtyard. The danseuse, thereafter began her recital through the lecture demonstration method. She acquainted the students with the major postures and stances of Odissi dance like the ‘Chowka’ and the ‘Tribhanga’ and the different styles of ‘Pranam’, typical to this dance form. She also demonstrated several postures which are often carved outside the temple walls in Orissa, thus, highlighting how this dance form had evolved from the ancient temples.

Padmashri Ileana Citaristi  thereafter, presented a dance  piece which began with slow graceful movements and gradually built up the tempo, culminating into a fast paced rhythmic performance exhibiting dexterous movements, perfect synchronization, intricate footwork and graceful gestures.

The lecture-demonstration was followed by a session, wherein students posed queries to the renowned dancer about the history, popularity and technical aspects of the Odissi dance form. The School Principal Mrs. Sangeeta Hajela felicitated, Padmashri Ileana Citaristi and the accompanying artists with mementoes. The programme was also attended by students of neighbouring schools like DPS Gautam Budh Nagar, DPS Ghaziabad Meerut Road Campus and Salwan Public School.
